"It Is Better to Be a Good Person Than to Be a Great Artist." Interpretation of Memoirs and Diaries by Anna Chlebounová

This thesis deals with the personality of a deputy and later senator Anna Chlebounová (4th December 1875 - 14th March 1946). She came from the rural environment of East Bohemia and throughout her highest political career she remained connected with the Republican Party of Farmers and Peasants. She worked in the parliament of the First Czechoslovak Republic between 1918 and 1935. The research subject of this thesis is the private and everyday life of Anna Chlebounová in the countryside which has mostly been omitted by Czech historiography. The aim of the thesis is to reconstruct the inner world, critical life events and changing life roles of Anna Chlebounová based on the analysis of preserved ego-documents. These key moments arising from her memoirs and diaries are put into the broader context of everyday life in the last quarter of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century. Besides the introduction, the analysis of primary and secondary sources and the conclusion, the thesis is divided into two main chapters. The first part is a biography that briefly and chronologically portrays life of Anna Chlebounová including her political activities.
